First, he was married to Madeleine Carroll. She was an English actress, popular both in Britain and America in the 1930s and 1940s. At the peak of her success in 1938, she was the world’s highest-paid actress.

In 1941, she starred opposite Sterling Hayden in Virginia. The following year they married, divorcing in 1946.

Hayden then married Betty Ann de Noon from 1947 to 1958. They had four children, Christian, Dana, Gretchen and Matthew.

After the divorce, Hayden married Catherine Devine in 1960. They had two children, David and Andrew.
