Rodney Graham Obituary

Rodney Graham CM (January 16, 1949 – October 22, 2022) was a Canadian artist and musician who was most often associated with the Vancouver School. Rodney Graham was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2016 for his contributions to Canadian contemporary art.

“He’s been battling cancer, but he always played it down,” said artist Ian Wallace, who’d known him for over 50 years.

“‘Oh everything’s okay,’ you know? I was supposed to meet up with him last week. He said, ‘Sorry, I had to go back to the hospital. I’ll see you when I get out sort of thing.

“But he was like that, he always had a positive view of things. Didn’t want people to worry about him.”

Born in Abbotsford on Jan. 16, 1949, Graham was one of those artists who seemed to excel at almost anything. He was mostly known as a photo-conceptualist but was equally adept at performance art, video, graphic art, sculpture, and music.
