The American television and film director and producer Bruce Weigert Paltrow was born on November 26, 1943 in New York, New York, United States to Dorothy (née Weigert) and Arnold Paltrow (né Paltrowitz). He had a brother named Robert.
Paltrow studied painting at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the late 1960s, he began directing stage productions in New York City, where he met actress Blythe Danner.
He was known for St. Elsewhere (1982), The White Shadow (1978) and Tattinger’s (1988).

Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner tied the knot on December 14, 1969, and remained married until his death.
He died on October 3, 2002, at the age of 58, from complications from oral cancer and pneumonia. Paltrow had been diagnosed with oral cancer in 1999.
Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner had two children; actress Gwyneth Paltrow and director Jake Paltrow.
In 2007, his widow Blythe Danner, in cooperation with The Oral Cancer Foundation, set up a fund in his name to address oral cancer issues in the United States. The foundation works primarily in the areas of public awareness, early detection, patient support functions and research.
