The late Papa Bouba Diop was a Senegalese Professional Footballer, who played as a defensive midfielder and center-back at Lens.

Papa Bouba Diop was born on 28th January 1978 and died on 29th November 2020. H spent most of his career days in England and played for Fulham and Portsmouth in the Premier League, and won the FA Cup with the latter club in 2008.

Papa Bouba Diop died at age 42 after battling a long-time illness. His demise hit the Senegal citizens. Hence, the Senegal players stood on their grounds to pay a heartfelt tribute amidst the ongoing World Cup.

Supporters were reportedly cheering on their nation ahead of the World Cup clash with Ecuador on Tuesday. Citizens of Senegal held up pictures and shirts with a number of those watching wearing his famous number 19 jersey.

The posters held up read the message:

“True lion never dies.”

Papa Bouba Diop was a regular feature in Senegal’s international set-up between 2001 and 2008. He won 63 caps in that time and score 11 goals. He was also the scorer when Senegal stunned World Cup holders France in their group win in 2002. After the game which led Senegal to victory, the players held up a similar banner to show they were united in remembering the former star.
