According to department spokesman Aaron Swanum, his death was “an expected natural causes death due to illness.”

Blom kidnapped a 14-year-old girl, gagged her, and raped her in 1975. He imprisoned her in his car trunk, but she managed to escape and report him.

Blom was tried and found guilty. He was charged with aggravated assault in 1978. He was arrested in 1983 for criminal sexual conduct. He threatened two teenage girls with a knife in a remote area the same year, tied them to a tree, and put socks in their mouths.

He choked and revived one of them several times before announcing his intention to rape them. The girls were rescued after a police officer noticed their car was parked incorrectly and investigated. He had six felony convictions by May 1999, five of which involved kidnapping and sexual assault.

Blom began serving his prison sentence at MCF-Oak Park Heights, a maximum-security facility in Stillwater, Minnesota, in 2021.

He had previously spent approximately four years at medium-security prison MCF-Faribault after being transferred there from maximum-security facility SCI Greene in Pennsylvania.
