Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he attended Quartz Hill High School in Los Angeles County, California. He also attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

As a wrestler, Tyrus signed to the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), where he is the reigning NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion in his first reign.
