List started his golf playing at an early age. He was ranked among the top amateur golfer in the United States. List was the runner-up at the 2004 U.S. Amateur.

Following his runner-up finish, List was extended an invitation to play in the 2005 Masters, where he finished T33 and recorded an ace during the Par 3 Contest. That same year, he won Jones Cup Invitational.

After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 2007, List turned professional. The golfer qualified for the PGA Tour in 2013 and has since been participating in the sport.
