Penny Marshall died in Los Angeles on December 17, 2018, at the age of 72. According to her death certificate, the causes were cardiopulmonary failure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 1.

She was survived by her daughter Tracy Reiner.

Marshall has received several Golden Globe nominations in the Best Performance in a Television Series category, was nominated for a Saturn Award for her directing work and a lifetime creative achievement award at the American Comedy Awards.
In 2010 and 2011, Marshall directed two episodes of the Showtime series United States of Tara. Women of Vision Award in 2013. Marshall planned on developing a biopic on Effa Manley, but it never materialised.
