Serrano was born in Carolina, the same town where her sister Cindy was born. Carolina was the birthplace of her grandparents. Her family relocated to New York when she was a child, joining the city’s large Puerto Rican diaspora (colloquially known as Nuyoricans). She grew up in an oasis of Puerto Rican culture, surrounded by this community, where traditional food and salsa music reign supreme.
