The sad passing of Niamh Síle Bhreathnach has gotten tongues wagging. Niamh Síle Bhreathnach was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Minister for Education from 1993 to 1994 and 1994 to 1997.

Niamh Bhreathnach as a politician also served as a Teachta Dála for the Dún Laoghaire constituency from 1992 to 1997 and also as a senator from June 1997 to July 1997.

Her mother is Lena Donnellan and her father is Breandán Breathnach. The deceased has four siblings. The late Niamh Bhreathnach was an alumnus of Dominican College Sion Hill and Froebel College of Education.

Per records, she was one of the few TDs who were selected to the cabinet at the start of their first term as a TD. At the time of her death, she had an estimated net worth of $6 million.

Niamh Bhreathnach was born on 1st June 1945 in Loughlinstown, Ireland, and died on 6th  February 2023 at the age of 77 at Blackrock, Dublin, Ireland. The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed and her funeral arrangement is yet to be made public.

Her death was confirmed by some tributes that were posted by some political personalities including President Michael D Higgins.

Some tributes read:

“In her time in office, she would go on to leave an extraordinary legacy of educational reform.”

“I can recall that we were all possessed of a great sense of anxiety that we must take our opportunity to get changes done and Niamh set about that task with gusto.”

“She remained deeply interested in the education sector and broader public affairs up to recent weeks. She will be deeply missed.”
“Her period as Minister for Education saw marked reductions in the pupil-teacher ratio… She was also a real advocate of the Educate Together movement, at a time when the debate on patronage in Education was difficult but vitally important, and several Educate Together schools were opened during her time in office, including the Educate Together School in Galway.”

The late Niamh Bhreathnach was survived by her husband, Tom Ferris, and her two children, Clíodhna and Macdara. She also left behind her grandchildren, Sghle, Fionnuala, and Éadaoin.
