On August 11, 2013, Winchester agreed to a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. On August 25, James was let go by the team as part of the Eagles’ initial round of roster reductions.
The Kansas City Chiefs acquired Winchester on March 13, 2015. Winchester and the Chiefs agreed to a five-year, $4.45 million contract extension on January 23, 2017.
Winchester forced a fumble on a Darren Sproles punt return on September 17, 2017, during Week 2’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Anthony Sherman, a colleague, was able to recover the fumble, which helped to initiate a field goal-scoring drive.
