Charania was born in Chicago to Pakistani parents who had immigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s. He was raised in Wilmette, Illinois, and attended New Trier High School. He graduated from Loyola University Chicago.

His mom worked hard as a nurse at Skokie Hospital in the Chicago suburbs, and during 11th grade, she encouraged Shams to apply for a job as a unit concierge, a fancy term for secretary, on the floor where she worked.

It was hard for him to fully devote himself to the job because he was already dead-set on what he wanted to do with his life.

But Mrs. Charania wanted Shams to work in a conventionally prestigious field like a doctor, a lawyer, or an accountant, theme children around the world and all walks of life can understand and appreciate.
