The Dallas Texans were founded in 1959 by businessman Lamar Hunt as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The team relocated to Kansas City in the spring of 1963 and adopted its current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the 1970 merger, and the team is now worth more than $3.7 billion. Clark Hunt, Hunt’s son, is the company’s chairman and CEO. While the elder Hunt’s ownership stakes were transferred to his widow and children following his death in 2006, Clark is the franchise’s operating head; he represents the Chiefs at all league meetings and has final authority on personnel changes.

The Chiefs won three AFL championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969, and were the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. That victory on January 11, 1970, was the final game before the leagues merged completely.

The Chiefs were also the second team, after the Green Bay Packers (who they faced in Super Bowl I), to appear in more than one Super Bowl (and the first AFL team to do so), as well as the first to play in the championship game in two different decades.

Despite the early postseason success, winning five of their first six postseason games, the team struggled to find success in the playoffs for decades, losing ten of eleven playoff games from 1993 to 2017, including an eight-game losing streak. Since then, the Chiefs have won eight of their last eleven playoff games, including Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, giving the franchise its first championship in fifty years. The team reached Super Bowl LV in February 2021 but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team advanced to Super Bowl LVII, where they will face the Philadelphia Eagles, nearly two years later.

Andy Reid’s success with the Kansas City Chiefs can be traced back to a single decision he made a decade ago. Reid has led Kansas City to the NFL playoffs nine times in ten seasons since taking over as head coach in 2013.
