Simone Edwards, a former basketball player from Jamaica who was the first from her country to play in the WNBA in the US, has passed away. She died at home in Florida after a protracted battle with illness.

After a protracted fight with ovarian cancer, Edwards passed away today. She was 49.

The 49-year-old Edwards, a former player for the Seattle Storm in the Women’s National Basketball Association, had stage three ovarian cancer when it was detected a while back (WNBA). She became the first Jamaican woman to sign with a WNBA team.

Edwards won the WNBA Championship with the Storm in 2004 before announcing her retirement from the game in May 2006.

Edwards was selected as a development player for the New York Liberty in the WNBA in 1997 and played for them for three years, but she didn’t appear in a single game until joining the Seattle Storm expansion team in 2000.

During the first six seasons of the franchise, she would be the only player to appear in every game, capturing a WNBA championship in 2004. She was known as the Jamaican Hurricane and left the WNBA in 2006 as the all-time leader in rebounds, games, and minutes for the group.
