American actor, activist, and former model Jane Fonda was born on December 21, 1937. Awarded several honors, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, and seven Primetime Emmy Awards, Fonda is regarded as a film icon.

The late 1950s theater work of Fonda served as the starting point for her 1960s cinematic career. She made practically two movies a year on average during the decade, beginning in 1960 with Tall Tale, in which she reenacted one of her Broadway performances as a college cheerleader who pursues Anthony Perkins’ character, a basketball player. In the movie, Robert Redford made his acting debut as well.

On December 21, 1937, Jane Seymour Fonda was born in New York City. Her parents were American actor Henry Fonda and Canadian-born socialite Frances Ford Seymour. Her father claims that an Italian ancestor who went to the Netherlands in the 1500s is the source of the surname Fonda.
