Lynyrd Skynyrd released its first album in 1973, and along the line, became famous for the Southern rock genre with songs such as “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird”.
Upon its release of five studio albums, the band activities were interrupted following a plane crash that killed Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, in 1977.
Other members of the band had sustained serious injuries.
Lynyrd Skynyrd made a comeback in 1987 with Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant as lead vocalist. As of 2019, the band could boast of 15 albums under its name, with Rolling Stone magazine listing them amongst the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has sold over 28 million records in the United States.
