Manfred Schaefer, a legendary member of the Socceroos, passed away at the age of 80, and the Australian football world is in grief.

Taking time off from his profession as a milkman to compete in the 1974 World Cup in what was then West Germany, Schaefer, who immigrated to Australia from then-East Germany at the age of 10, was a member of the Socceroos squad.
From 1967 and 1974, the former defender played in 73 matches for Australia, 49 of which were “A” internationals.

He was honored for his contributions to the game by being inducted into Football Australia’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

Chris Nikou, the chairman of the FA, referred to Schaefer as a “giant of Australian football” and noted that he played club football for Blacktown and St. George-Budapest.
“Manfred gave everything to Australia, representing the country both on and off the field with the greatest of distinction,” Nikou said in a statement. “While not born in Australia, Manfred gave everything to Australia.
