Ronald Whyte died at the age of 80 in April 2023. A representative from the United States District Court for the Northern District of California confirmed Whyte’s death on Tuesday, April 11 2023.
President George H. W. Bush nominated Whyte to the new seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California created by 104 Stat. 5089 on July 26, 1991.

On February 6, 1992, he was confirmed by the United States Senate and received his commission on March 2, 1992. On March 2, 2009, he was promoted to senior status. He became inactive on November 1, 2016.
Ronald Whyte’s professional activities included membership on the Dean of Santa Clara Law School’s High Tech Advisory Council (2001-present), the Executive Committee of the Santa Clara Inn of Court (1992-2013; president 1997-1998), and participation in the National Jury Instruction Project (2008–2009).
Ronald Whyte also served by designation on panels of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where he authored published opinions.
