When called upon to play during a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes in early 2020, backup goaltender and occasional Zamboni driver David Ayres utterly rocked the globe.

And even though Ayres, who was filling in for Petr Mrazek and James Reimer, appeared terribly shaky for the Hurricanes, he managed to win by making 8 saves in an incredible 6-3 triumph.

People sometimes overlook the fact that Ayres wasn’t the first NHL emergency backup to make a splash. No, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Scott Foster is the recipient of that honor.

Foster made all seven saves he faced for the Blackhawks, who were playing without injured goalies Anton Forsberg and Collin Delia.

This helped the Blackhawks defeat the Winnipeg Jets 6-2. The problem is that because Foster only played for 14 minutes, he was not given credit for the victory in the NHL’s official statistics. However, the individual was the day’s hero.
