Joel was born on November 25, 1979, and began his career as a child actor who starred in the Swedish opera dubbed Storstad (1990). He was in the show for 22 episodes but stopped acting for over a decade.

In 2002, he came into the movie industry again while he was studying at a drama school. He featured in several films including Hannah Med H, God Save the King (Tjenare kungen). 

He graduated from Malmo Theatre Academy in 2007 and started working at the Gothenburg City Theatre. He got the chance to star in Crime and Punishment. He set a record for starring in 9 films in just 14 months during that time.
