He moved to Cheshire at the age of nine from Newcastle upon Tyne. He attended Wilmslow High School, finally dropping out with only three GCSEs, before being expelled from his private school for encouraging fights.

He said in a November 2016 Guardian article that this was because he didn’t put in as much effort since he considered school as an unneeded burden impeding his future as a pop artist.

Healy formed The1975 in 2002 with lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, drummer George Daniel, and producer George Daniel, all of whom he knew from Wilmslow High School.
Did Matty Healy get a tattoo on stage?
In the middle of the show, some dramatic classical music began to play, and the rest of the band stopped performing and left the stage. Then, a tattoo artist who appeared to be a doctor entered the room and started inking some letters onto Healy’s chest while still wearing what looked like a doctor’s costume. The inked phrase stated, “I’m a man.”
Unsurprisingly, fans posted video of the event on social media. As the tattoo artist cleaned a portion of Healy’s chest and began to apply the tattoo, Healy could be seen enjoying a cigarette while relaxing on an onstage couch.
