Dawn Harper-Nelson is a sports personnel from USA Illinois.

She suffered severe setbacks in her sophomore year when she tore her meniscus and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) prior to the IHSA sectional meet.

Despite having a ruptured PCL and meniscus, Harper was able to win a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles, but her coach, Nino Fennoy, decided to withdraw her from the 300-meter hurdle finals due to her agony.

In the 100-meter hurdles, she beat her own Illinois state record in her junior year with a timing of 13.54.

That time still stands as the record. In her final year, Harper returned and successfully defended her championships, winning her third state final in the 100-meter hurdles (13.82) and the 300-meter hurdles.

Harper was a six-time IHSA state champion when she graduated from East St. Louis Senior High.
