When Rita Lee was given the news that she had lung cancer in 2021, she made the memorable decision to call her tumor “Jair” in the sarcastic rebuke of Brazil’s then-president Jair Bolsonaro.
The groundbreaking musician and feminist icon, who sold more than 55 million recordings over the course of a six-decade career, entered remission last year but passed away on Monday night at her home in So Paulo.

Fans were invited to a public wake at the city’s Parque Ibirapuera, one of Latin America’s biggest parks, in a statement posted to Lee’s Instagram account.
