Kilicdaroglu’s career spans both political and civil service. Before entering politics, he served as a civil servant and held the position of director-general of the Social Insurance Institution (SSK) at different times. He was elected to Parliament in 2002 and became the CHP’s parliamentary group leader. He also served as the deputy chairman of the Socialist International.

As the leader of the main opposition, Kilicdaroglu has focused on building coalitions and alliances to challenge the ruling party. He has successfully formed the Nation Alliance, which saw success in the 2019 local elections. Kilicdaroglu is also the joint candidate for the 2023 Turkish presidential election.
