Graeme James Souness, a manager, television analyst, and former professional football player of Scottish descent, was born on May 6, 1953.

Midfielder Souness led the Scotland team as captain and managed Rangers as a player in the late 1980s. He led the hugely successful Liverpool team in the early 1980s. He also had stints with Sampdoria, Middlesbrough, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Souness started his managerial career with Rangers, where he assisted them in winning four league cups and three Scottish championships, before taking over as Liverpool’s manager. Later, he was in charge of organizations like Turkey, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, Torino, Benfica, and Galatasaray.

Souness was a supporter of Hearts and Rangers and was born and raised in Edinburgh’s Saughton Mains district. During his teens, he engaged in the neighborhood boys’ group North Merchiston.

Souness started his professional career as an apprentice under Bill Nicholson at Tottenham Hotspur. He signed formal papers in 1968 when he was 15 years old. He reportedly became frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities and informed Nicholson that he was the greatest player at the team. Souness only served as a substitute once for Spurs during a UEFA Cup match.
