Clyde began working for The New York Times in 1964 as a copyboy and later as a City College of New York correspondent.

He worked for the New York Post before rejoining the Times in 1977.

He edited and wrote “The Times of the Seventies: The Culture, Politics, and Personalities That Defined the Decade,” which was published by Black Dog & Leventhal in 2013.
He was inducted into the New York Press Club’s Hall of Fame in 2015.
He has also worked as a professor at Hunter College’s Macaulay Honors College, where he taught an honors seminar course on New York City.
