After beginning his career with Racing de Santander, he signed for Real Madrid for €4.5 million when he was 19 years old. However, he was unable to maintain his form at Real Madrid, and he left the club after just one season. Later, he represented Valencia, Real Sociedad, and Betis, always in La Liga.

Canales represented Spain at the youth level for 39 times, helping the under-21 squad win the 2013 European Championship. During the 2019 season, he made his senior team debut. A four-year deal was agreed to by free agent Canales and Real Betis on July 3, 2018. He scored an all-time high of eight goals in the 2020–21 season.
