Jonathan Vincent Voight was born in Yonkers, New York, on December 29, 1938. His parents were Barbara Voight, née Kamp, and professional golfer Elmer Voight.

Jonathan grew up in a musically inclined household that included his two brothers Barry Voight and James Wesley Voight, best known as singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, whose songs include “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning.”
Jonathan Voight’s ancestry was predominantly made up of immigrants from Germany and Slovakia. While his maternal grandfather was from Germany, his paternal grandfather was from Slovakia, as were the parents of his paternal grandmother. Notably, he was related to political figure Joseph P. Kamp through his mother.

In 1982, Voight and director Ashby collaborated once more on the film Lookin’ to Get Out. He took on the character of Alex Kovac, a con artist who owes money to mobsters in New York and has a fantasy of being wealthy enough to pay them back in Las Vegas.

Voight was heavily involved in the production of the film because he co-wrote the script and co-produced it. He produced and acted in Table for Five the next year as a grieving father parenting his children alone.
