Prior to the movie, she had portrayed Susan “Rita” White in Willy Russell’s play of the same name on the West End stage.

Her portrayal of a working-class hairdresser from Liverpool who aspires to better herself by enrolling in an Open University course in English literature earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
