Abby Phillip, who is of Afro-Trinidadian descent, was born in Virginia to her parents, June Phillip, a realtor, and Carlos Phillip, a teacher who later went on to become an educational psychologist.

She grew up with five siblings, and her family briefly relocated to Trinidad and Tobago during her childhood, only to return to the United States when she was nine years old.

Abby Phillip attended Bowie High School after spending her formative years in Bowie, Maryland. She graduated from Harvard University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government. She had originally planned to pursue pre-medical studies. Phillip worked as a writer for The Harvard Crimson while at Harvard.

Abby Phillip began her career with CNN in 2017, where she largely covered Trump Administration news. Prior to joining CNN, she worked at The Washington Post, where she did national political reporting and other general duties.

She also worked for ABC News as an ABC News Fellow and digital reporter in New York City. She has also appeared as a guest on C-SPAN several times. Phillip began her career in journalism as a White House correspondent and blogger for Politico, covering themes such as campaign financing and lobbying. She also appears on the PBS show Washington Week with Robert Costa on occasion.
