George Alagiah bowel cancer: How long has George Alagiah had bowel cancer? – British newsreader, journalist and television presenter George Maxwell Alagiah OBE died on 24 July 2023 from colorectal cancer at the age of 67. Alagiah battled the disease for nearly a decade, with the BBC confirming in April 2014 that he was being treated for colon cancer.

On June 28, 2014, Alagiah tweeted that he was making “encouraging progress.” In late October 2015, he updated his supporters once more, confirming on Twitter that the treatment was over.

On November 10, 2015, he returned to the BBC.

Three years after his return to the BBC, it was reported that his cancer had resurfaced, causing him to step down in order to undertake additional treatment.

In a March 2018 interview with The Sunday Times, Alagiah stated that the disease was terminal and could have been identified earlier if the screening program in England, which is automatically offered from the age of 60, was the same as that in Scotland, which is automatically offered from the age of 50.

In June 2020, Alagiah said that cancer had spread to his lungs, liver and lymph nodes, but was not at a “chronic” or “terminal” stage. In October 2022, Alagiah announced that his cancer had spread further and he took a break from television to undergo a new series of treatment.

Unfortunately, Alagiah died from the illness on 24 July 2023, at the age of 67.
