In a statement, her agent said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved client and much loved stage, screen, and radio actress Doreen Mantle, aged 97. “She died peacefully at home. She is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren and one brother.”

Doreen Mantle was born on June 22, 1926 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since the 1960s, she has been in a number of British television shows, including The Duchess of Duke Street, The Wild House, Sam Saturday, Chalk, Casualty, The Bill, Doctors, Holby City, Lovejoy, and Jonathan Creek.

She starred as lollipop lady Queenie on Jam & Jerusalem from 2006 until 2009. In January 2018, she appears in Father Brown episode 63.

Mantle portrayed Mrs Shaemen in Barbra Streisand’s cinematic adaptation of Yentl (1983). Mantle appeared in Coronation Street from 2010 to 2011 as the mother of Colin Fishwick, whose identity was assumed by John Stape.
