Ford took a leave of absence to seek treatment for his alcohol and drug addiction. Despite the scandal, Ford initially ran for mayor in the October 2014 election.
However, he withdrew after he was hospitalised and diagnosed with an abdominal malignancy in September 2014. Ford received cancer treatment and briefly returned to council, but died in March 2016 after chemotherapy proved futile.
