In Newport News, Virginia, at a shipyard before the start of World War II, Doss worked as a joiner.

On April 1, 1942, at Camp Lee, Virginia, he made the decision to enlist despite being given the option of being deferred because of his shipyard employment.

Doss intended to pursue a career in carpentry after the war, but his left arm sustained severe damage that prevented him from doing so.
