Christian Thielemann received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in 2003. In January 2016, he was a Visiting Professor in Opera Studies in the Humanitas Programme at Oxford University.
In 2019, he made his conducting debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the New Year’s Concert and is set to return to direct the Vienna New Year’s Concert in 2024.
From 2013 to 2022, he was the creative director of the Salzburg Easter Festival. He will be Generalmusikdirektor of Berlin’s Staatsoper beginning in 2024.
