The portrayal of intimate scenes in film and television often sparks discussions about consent and boundaries. In the Kunle Afolayan-directed Netflix series “Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre,” actress Oyindamola Sanni, who plays the character Olatorera, spoke about the complexities of consent in a sex scene with Saro, portrayed by Kunle Remi.

Throughout the series, Olatorera finds herself in situations where she gives consent during sex with Saro but later withdraws it mid-action. Sanni, in a recent interview, shared her insights into Olatorera’s perspective, emphasizing the character’s vulnerability and the influence of love on her actions.
“I feel she was just in love,” Sanni explained. “You know when you’re in love you’re vulnerable. So it wasn’t a thing of she wanted the sex, but it happened. She wanted it at the same time she was still reserved.”

Sanni portrays Olatorera as the victim in this scenario, highlighting Saro’s role in placing her in a compromising position. Despite Olatorera’s preference for a subtler form of affection, Saro’s actions push her into a situation she may not have actively sought.
“It’s not like she was craving [the sex]. She was crazy in love and [the sex] came alongside the love,” Sanni elaborated.
Accepting the role of Olatorera posed its challenges for Sanni, who found herself juggling demanding responsibilities both on and off set. Despite facing personal difficulties, including caring for her sick father and working on her master’s degree thesis, Sanni approached the role with dedication and professionalism.
“It was a bit challenging,” she admitted. “I was shuffling Lagos and Igbojaye because I had so much to deal with at home.”
Working alongside Kunle Remi, whom she previously collaborated with on “A Naija Christmas,” proved to be a comfortable experience for Sanni. Despite the sensitive nature of the scenes, Remi’s professionalism and support helped create a safe working environment on set.
