At the age of 67, Aeschylus, an ancient Greek playwright, was killed when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head. According to legend, the eagle mistook his baldness for rock and attempted to crack the shell of its prey with it.

Pliny, a Roman author, added a strange twist to Aeschylus’ death by claiming that Aeschylus had been spending a lot of time outside to avoid a prophecy that he would be killed by a falling object.

Many historians believe the story about the death of Aeschylus may be a legend based on a misunderstanding of the iconography of Aeschylus’ tomb.

Aeschylus was a Greek tragedian who is often referred to as the “Father of Tragedy.” His work is where academic knowledge of the genre begins, and understanding of earlier Greek tragedy is largely based on inferences drawn from reading his surviving plays. Only seven out of his estimated seventy to ninety plays have survived
