Eileen Gu, an 18-year-old freestyle skier, has received a lot of attention as she prepares for the Winter Olympics. In front of a huge crowd, she advanced to the Big Air finals at her first qualifying bout today.

According to The New York Times, Eileen was born and raised in San Francisco and wanted to compete for China in 2019 because of her Chinese heritage.

According to the Times, Eileen’s mother, Yan, moved from China around 30 years ago and raised Eileen as a single parent. Yan used to work as a ski instructor at a resort in Lake Tahoe and travels with her daughter most of the time.
Eileen’s dad is a little mysterious. He is American and a Harvard graduate, according to the New York Times, but there is no public record of him, and she does not discuss him publicly.
