Born April 25, 1995, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Puk attended Washington High School where he played as first baseman and pitcher.

After high school, Puk was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 35th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft but did not sign with the team due to his intentions to pursue his education.

Puk then enrolled at the University of Florida to play collegiate baseball for the Florida Gators. In his last season at college, Puk was named to the 2016 SEC Academic Honor Roll for the third consecutive year.
