His father is a native Swedish speaker, while his mother spoke Finnish fluently. Stubb grew up speaking both languages.

From 1961 until 1975, his father Göran Stubb was the chairman of IFK Helsinki before becoming the Managing Director of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in 1976.

Göran Stubb founded European Sports organisation, a European scouting organisation, in 1983 after acting as the Secretary General for the 1982 Ice Hockey World Championships at the insistence of Jim Gregory, then Director of NHL Central Scouting.
This was the NHL’s first significant European scouting association. Stubb was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame as a builder in 2000.
