Anthony Varvaro, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who retired in 2016 to become a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has died.

According to police officials and his former teams, he was killed in a car crash Sunday morning (Sept. 11) on his way to work at the Sept. 11 memorial ceremony in Manhattan, according to police officials and his former teams.

Varvaro’s career in the MLB span six years and at the time of death, he had an estimated net worth of $3 million.

Varvaro attended St. John’s University, where he played college baseball for the St. John’s Red Storm.

After college, he had a six-year spell in the MLB, playing as a relief pitcher with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.

He retired from baseball in June 2016 to begin police training with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

He became a Port Authority police officer in December 2016.

He was assigned to the World Trade Center Command and after five years, he was transferred to the Port Authority’s police academy to become an instructor.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
