Johnson studied at East St. Louis Senior High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. He was chosen to participate in the 2020 All-American Bowl. He made a commitment to play college football at Texas A&M University as a four-star prospect.
Johnson recorded 14 tackles while a true freshman at Texas A&M in 2020, playing in seven games with one start. He started all 12 games as a sophomore in 2021 and finished with 79 tackles, an interception, and a sack. He was also selected to the All-SEC second team for his performance.
