McGovern, who was born on December 31, 1962, worked as UCLA’s director of football administration until his death on May 30, 2023.

McGovern attended Holy Cross College and was a four-year starter at defensive back. With 24 interceptions, he set a career NCAA Division I-AA record. He was named a consensus first-team Division I-AA All-American during his senior year 1984.

McGovern has been UCLA’s director of football administration since February after serving as defensive coordinator under Chip Kelly last season, albeit he barely completed half of the season due to health issues.

McGovern spent a year as the Chicago Bears’ inside linebackers coach before joining Kelly’s staff in Westwood. McGovern has nine years of NFL coaching experience, having served as a linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2015 and the New York Giants from 2016 to 2019.

However, most of McGovern’s coaching career came at the collegiate level, with his most extended stay at Boston College, where he served as defensive backs coach from 1994 to 1996, linebackers coach from 2000 to 2008, and defensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012. McGovern coached players including Mark Herzlich, Luke Kuechly, B.J. Raji, and Brian Flores while at the program.

McGovern has previously coached at Holy Cross, UMass, Pittsburgh, and, most recently, Nebraska as a defensive assistant in 2020. He is now nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Colleen McGovern, his wife, and their three kids, Amanda, Delainey, and Mackenzie, survive him.

He was on the ballot for this College Football Hall of Fame class at the time of his death.
