South Africa’s seasoned hooker, Bongi Mbonambi, has provided a positive update on his recovery journey, confirming the success of the surgery on his injured knee sustained during the World Cup final. The 32-year-old faces an extended period on the sidelines, but the successful procedure marks a crucial step in his rehabilitation.

Mbonambi’s World Cup final appearance was cut short after a brief stint on the field due to a right knee injury. The setback occurred as a result of an illegal clearout by All Blacks flanker Shannon Frizell, who received a yellow card from referee Wayne Barnes. Ironically, Frizell had spent the week leading up to the final with his left leg heavily strapped.

Despite the premature exit, Mbonambi displayed resilience by joining his teammates on the field for the victorious celebration after South Africa’s narrow 12-11 triumph. Following a period of post-tournament festivities, the Sharks front row underwent surgery this week, and he took to social media on Friday to share the encouraging news of the procedure’s success.

Sharks head coach John Plumtree provided insights into the extent of Mbonambi’s injury and outlined the expected timeline for his return.

“Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch both have knee injuries. Vincent will be back after three months, Bongi will be out longer, it could be the whole season,” Plumtree revealed.

While Mbonambi faces a more extended recovery period, he maintained an optimistic tone in his social media post, concluding with a touch of humor: “Thankfully I have a strong NECK,” accompanied by two medals, referencing his significant role in South Africa’s 2019 victory over England.

The injury setback poses challenges for Mbonambi, but his positive outlook and the successful surgery provide hope for a full recovery and a return to competitive rugby when the time is right.
