Boxer Ryan Garcia has tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, according to a letter sent by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association to all concerned parties and obtained by ESPN.

The urine samples were collected from Garcia the day before and the day of his upset win over Devin Haney last month. While the results weren’t known until later, Garcia has ten days to request that his B-sample be tested.

The A-sample also screened positive for 19-norandrosterone, but further lab analysis is needed to confirm its presence.

Garcia, denying any wrongdoing, stated in a video that he has never taken steroids and barely uses supplements. He also expressed disbelief at the accusation and asserted that he beat Haney fairly.

Golden Boy Promotions, headed by Oscar De La Hoya, is collaborating with Garcia’s team to investigate the situation and determine how the finding came about. Despite Garcia’s statements denying any knowledge of banned substances, the validity of his win over Haney is now in question pending the B-sample result.

Haney, disappointed by the news, emphasized the seriousness of boxing and the need for fairness and integrity in the sport. He criticized Garcia’s response to the situation and highlighted the risks involved in professional boxing.

Ostarine, the banned substance in question, is known for its muscle-building properties and has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list since 2008. Its use in boxing has led to controversies and sanctions in the past.

The positive test adds another layer of complexity to Garcia’s career, which has seen both highs and lows. Despite his massive social media following, Garcia has yet to win a world title and suffered a TKO defeat last April.

Conversely, Haney, the former undisputed lightweight champion, has been a dominant force in his division and is regarded as one of boxing’s top talents.

The implications of Garcia’s positive test extend beyond his individual career, potentially impacting the reputation of the sport and its regulatory bodies. As the investigation unfolds, boxing fans await further developments and hope for transparency and accountability in the resolution of this matter.
