In October of 1975, Lionel married Brenda Harvey-Richie, his first wife. The two were Tuskegee University sweethearts who began dating about the time Lionel joined his band, the Commodores.

Lionel’s band member Peter Michael Escovedo and his wife Karen Moss couldn’t afford to pay for their daughter Nicole Richie, who was born Nicole Camille Escovedo when she was three years old. Nicole was adopted by Lionel and Brenda when she was nine years old.

In 1984, Lionel met Diane Alexander, with whom he supposedly began a relationship two years later.

His relationship with Brenda had ended by the time they started dating. They hadn’t divorced yet, though.

Brenda found out about Lionel’s romance in 1988 when she went to Alexander’s flat and found the two inside.

Brenda allegedly “drop-kicked” him in the “stomach area” and began venting her rage on Alexander once he left the apartment, according to witnesses.

Brenda was arrested for attacking Lionel and Alexander after Lionel phoned the cops. She was released from jail the next day after paying a $5,000 bond. They divorced in August of 1993.
