Howden was given the distinction of becoming the 31st captain in Moose Jaw Warriors history on September 30, 2016. He had been assistant captain the season before being captain when he was only 17 years old.

Howden also demonstrated his leadership abilities when he captained Team Canada and guided them to a gold medal win at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup. He credited the influence of former Warriors captain Brayden Point for his development as a team leader.
Howden later committed himself to the Tampa Bay Lightning by signing a three-year entry-level deal with the team on December 28, 2016.

After the Moose Jaw Warriors were bounced from the 2017 WHL playoffs, Howden signed an amateur tryout contract with the Syracuse Crunch. Under the direction of Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx, he played his first game of professional hockey on April 7, 2017, against the Binghamton Senators.
The next day at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, Howden scored the first goal of his professional career in a 3-2 victory over the Albany Devils. He then registered his first professional assist on April 12, 2017, in the Utica Memorial Auditorium, during a 7-2 victory over the Utica Comets.
