Towns was born in Edison, New Jersey, on November 15, 1995. Karl Towns Sr., his father, is African-American, and Jacqueline Cruz, his mother, is a Dominican Republic native.

Towns’ mother and older sister, Lachelle, liked the originality of a hyphenated name and added “Anthony” to it, believing that the name Karl alone was dull.

Can Karl-Anthony Towns speak Spanish?

Towns once stated that his goal is to learn Spanish fluently. To aid his development, he has urged his mother and sister to only communicate with him in Spanish.

He expects to be able to conduct media interviews in Spanish in the future and plans to return to the Dominican Republic during the off-season.
