The diminutive scrum-half, Caolin Blade, started the new season in brilliant form, showcasing his impeccable support running to secure a stunning hat-trick. His partnership with JJ Hanrahan, who contributed 12 points from the boot, proved crucial as Connacht surged to a 27-5 lead by halftime.
Keelan Giles scored a late try for the Ospreys, reducing the deficit to eight points. Reuben Morgan-Williams and new signing James Ratti also crossed for the Welsh side. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to mark Justin Tipuric’s 200th appearance with a comeback win.
Influential lock Rhys Davies did manage to secure a try-scoring bonus point for the Ospreys with a late effort, but Cathal Forde’s 56th-minute try, converted by Hanrahan, kept Connacht comfortably in the lead.
The game kicked off with fly-half JJ Hanrahan turning a scrum penalty into the opening three points for Connacht. He swiftly added three more points to the tally, extending the lead to 6-0 within the first five minutes.
A crucial tackle from Joe Joyce, another of Connacht’s debutants, disrupted Ospreys’ momentum. This created an opportunity for Caolin Blade, who followed Tom Farrell’s skillful outside break to score the first try of the match in the 11th minute. Hanrahan successfully converted, and moments later, with Owen Williams missing a penalty kick and kicking the ball out on the full, Cathal Forde found a gap and delivered a perfectly timed pass for Blade to score under the posts, extending the lead to 20 points.

As the clock reached 33 minutes, Joe Joyce’s excellent work broke Ospreys’ defensive line around the side of a ruck. He fed Caolin Blade, who completed his hat-trick from 10 meters out, with Hanrahan once again adding the extra points.
A timely response from the Ospreys came as Max Nagy released Keelan Giles, enabling him to get past Andrew Smith and score a much-needed try for the visitors. Despite Will Griffiths leaving the field due to injury, the Ospreys continued to mount a comeback, with replacement Jack Walsh setting up and converting Reuben Morgan-Williams’ try.
Connacht conceded again as Morgan-Williams executed a well-placed kick, forcing a five-meter scrum. James Ratti powered over the line, with Keiran Williams on hand for the conversion. Walsh’s successful kick brought the score to 27-19.
However, Connacht responded rapidly. Just three minutes later, from a maul on the edge of Ospreys’ 22, Cathal Forde made an impressive line break, receiving a perfectly timed pass from Jarrad Butler. Forde broke through two tackles to secure the bonus point for Connacht. Hanrahan’s conversion capped off the scoring.
The match’s scoring opportunities waned until Rhys Davies managed to break through in the 74th minute, capitalizing on the good work by replacements Dom Morris and Ben Warren. Walsh’s conversion provided the final scoring act of a thrilling encounter.
