From January 1997 until his retirement in December 2018, Carroll Leavell (October 23, 1936 – June 26, 2023) served as an American politician and a Republican senator from New Mexico, representing District 41. Eastern New Mexico University is where Leavell obtained his BA.

When Republican Senator Billy McKibben of District 41 resigned from the Senate and the seat became available, Leavell was the only candidate in the Republican primary on June 4, 1996, winning with 530 votes.

He then defeated Democratic candidate Pat Darcy in the general election on November 5, 1996.
With 606 votes in the 2000 Republican primary and 2,749 votes in the general election on November 2, Leavell was the only candidate.
Again running unopposed, he received 1,309 votes to win the Republican primary on June 1, 2004.
Carroll Leavell cause of death
Carroll Leavell gave up his breath on June 26, 2023, at the age of 86. He died from a cause of death which remains undisclosed. He was initially elected in 1996 and resigned in December 2018 owing to health concerns after traveling to Houston for cancer treatment earlier that year.
